Fakes are cheap Vinyl-clad bags that someone has slapped a Duck emblem on; they don't resemble any actual D&B model. Counterfeits actually copy an existing model, sometimes made with leather. These are poorly made copies. At least HALF of the "Dooneys" sold by resellers today are fakes! I am not kidding! They were made back in the '80s and '90s and have NOT held up well over time! BEWARE! ALL of our bags are guaranteed to be AUTHENTIC or your money back!
I bought this bag from Ebay, got all excited because it looked like a handbag I had been looking for and I hit that BUY button within 10 seconds. Rookie Mistake #13. By the time I had reviewed ALL the pictures I realized this was a HORRIBLE version of the East/West bag I was looking for. Pure Crap, and I keep it on my Shelf of Shame to remind me that fakes are everywhere and even I am susceptible. Look below; even the FOB is fake! (The REAL Dooney is on the left.)
Real Dooneys are well made and delightfully overbuilt. They really were built to last a lifetime, or maybe two or three if you take care of them. Fakes are made for a quick sale and disappoint within minutes. If you think there is no difference between a real Dooney and a fake, keep on buying from Ebay and you will quickly find out the difference the hard way. Soon you will have your own Shelf of Shame.
This has to be the most scary counterfeit I have ever seen. As you can see, the dimensions are right, and from a distance, this fake looks real! I was so excited when I saw this from an Ebay seller from a Gulf State. Unfortunately there were not enough close-ups online for me to detect the fraud.
As you can see, when you get down to the details, there are a LOT of things wrong. But beyond that, the fake bag has all the luxurious suppleness of a Mack Truck. I have to hold the flap down with my hand to take a picture as it won't stay open on its own! Imagine having to use a bag this stiff; no wonder it looks totally UNUSED. No one could have fought with this bag for very long.
I paid $10.99 for this fake, and at least I can use it to show you why it is so bad. Inside there is a MADE IN CHINA tag -- you can barely see it sticking up from the seam on the right side, on top of the BLACK LEATHER pocket panel (ironic, since Dooney uses vinyl for its pocket panels!) Of course, the D&B bag has its usual MADE IN USA tag. The Dooney bag's leather is so soft and supple, it was easy to put this full-sized pencil in as a spacer to open it up; the fake bag, I had to use a 4" stick and that was as wide as she would go! Imagine actually USING this thing! Well, it has finally found a home in my Swamp of Shame!
